How To Clean Shower Tiles Without Scrubbing (From Slightly Dirty To Grimy Tiles)

A shower is supposed to be the most hygienic space in your home. Since tiles are a big part of your shower and have more direct contact with your skin, keeping them clean is essential.

If your tiles have started to look less than stellar, here are five methods for cleaning them (depending on how grimy your shower is).

Method #1. Steam cleaning

This method is always a good place to start, even if you decide to go for something a little stronger later.

All you need to do is turn on the hot water in your shower and let it run for several minutes—remember to close the door and windows, so the steam doesn't escape. Then, wipe the tiles with a cloth or sponge.

The steam will loosen up the more superficial grime, leaving only the deep-set stains—if there are any.

Method #2. Alkaline cleaners

Alkaline cleaners work best for dirty grout. While these types of cleaners are similar regarding what kind of grime they can remove, many things can vary depending on the specific brand and product, including their use.

If you choose this method for cleaning your grout and tiles, go for an alkaline cleaner on the milder side—and don't forget to follow the instructions and precautions on the label.

Method #3. Vinegar and dishwasher detergent

Detergent and soap are made for removing dirt and grime, so you can never go wrong with a classic like a dishwasher detergent. On the other hand, vinegar is excellent at dissolving minerals from hard water that form deposits on your tiles.

So, mix equal parts dishwasher detergent and vinegar in a spray bottle to make a cleaning solution that will leave your shower tiles shiny and clean. Spray the solution on the tiles, and after one hour, wipe it away with water and a clean cloth.

Method #4. Oxygen bleach and water

Oxygen bleach is your best bet if you're looking for a stronger solution. This chemical substance kills germs and causes oxidation, which helps break down stains.

To use this method:

  1. Dissolve ⅓ cup of oxygen bleach into a gallon of water. You can put it in a spray bottle or any container to apply it with a sponge.
  2. Apply the solution to the stained tiles by spraying them or wiping the stains with a dipped sponge.
  3. Let the mix rest for fifteen minutes, then rinse it with water from the shower and a clean microfiber cloth.

Oxygen bleach is a safer and more gentle alternative to chlorine bleach, but you still need to take precautions! Remember to wear gloves and ventilate the area.

Method #5. Borax and hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide's chemical compound is excellent for making the stains colorless and bringing them to the surface for easier removal. Meanwhile, borax is a potent chemical powder that can break down oily, acidic, and fatty substances.

The qualities of both of these chemical-based cleaners make them the perfect option when nothing else works and scrubbing is the only option left.

Here are the steps:

  1. Before using this method, ensure nobody's using the shower for the day.
  2. Make the solution, and mix one cup of borax in one gallon of water.
  3. Dip a sponge in the mix to wipe the stained tiles, or pour the solution into a spray bottle to sprinkle it on the tiles. Leave the mixture to rest for five hours.
  4. Spray the tiles with hydrogen peroxide and leave the solution for another two hours.

Afterward, all you need to do is rinse and wipe the tiles!

Note: Remember to wear gloves and leave the area ventilated!
